February 2014 – Time for a bit of Crowdsourcing? |
The word ‘crowdsourcing’, which means taking the contributions of the general public, was coined in 2006, although the practice has been around a lot longer. The RSPB have been at it for the last 35 years with their Big Garden Birdwatch, which is an annual event that saw 590,000 people taking part last year.
Many schools are taking part from 20th January-14th February 2014: perhaps your school is one of them. The survey encourages schoolchildren of all ages, and their teachers, to discover which birds they share their school grounds with and to learn about their behaviour. Follow the link to our February dates for more details.
Using crowdsourcing, smart phones and an app, the Ash dieback fungus was tracked by scientists in a way that would have been impossible in the past. So technology and nature come together in a positive way. Which leads me to recall a very recent sighting of a kingfisher that caused a smile and brightened my day! I looked up to see if anyone else had been lucky enough to spot it; the only other two people around were both looking at their phones. Maybe there was a posting about someone spotting a kingfisher!
Did you know that only rainforests have a greater biodiversity than wetlands and on 2nd February it is World Wetlands Day? This week’s theme just happens to be Wetlands and in view of the ‘bird flavour’ we have just now, we’re in the process of compiling a gallery of bird pictures to complete the menu.
