June 2013 – A Day in the Life of a Water Molecule

Newsletter June 2013

Well, we were about to embark on some resources with the theme of Summer, but after this week’s weather we really thought it inappropriate.  Never mind, report writing is always less painful when it’s horrible outside.

We are continuing our development of the resources that are both interactive and animated.  This month’s featured resource is all about the water cycle:

This one really demonstrates how the interactive format can provide a level of functionality that cannot be matched by a simple picture.  You can interact with the water cycle Acrostiword, filling in each answer – letter by letter, by simply clicking on the relevant box.  The file also provides a wonderful animation of the water cycle which takes children through each stage of the process.

As our water cycle resource shows, the multi-functional, interactive nature of .swf files enables us to create innovative resources that really help bring a lesson to life!  (Now filed under the topic title: Rivers and Water)

Like many of our resources, this particular one can serve a cross-curricular purpose. As well as demonstrating the science of the water cycle, it could be used as a lesson starter for a creative writing session.  For example, the resource could help to establish the vocabulary and lead on to writing: “A Day in the Life of a Water Molecule”.  I think my favourite part of the journey would be in the river: high up in the hills racing down over the rocks with all my fellow molecules!
